I have to say that small groups is the way to go. At our church we've done several men's small group studies. I highly recommend "LifeBuilders Essentials" followed by "Kingdom Calling". Men are dying to get closer to the Lord and each other and these studies are perfect ways to do it. We have them during the week where each week, a different man hosts the study at his house. (The host provides food, in the way of inexpensive snacks or a pizza because eating together is a great way to fellowship. Plus many men are coming straight from work so they miss dinner otherwise.) This way we get to see how each other lives, meet their families, etc... I would say, if you haven't done it before, give it a try.

As a the Men's Ministry leader at our church, I can testify to the power and effectiveness of this process. When we started implementing short talks and small group discussions at our monthly gatherings the I noticed two things: 1) men are dying to talk to other men about what's going on in their lives. They realize that everyone else is going through or has experienced what they're going through so its okay to talk about it. And 2) Men finally get to know the other men in the church and develop relationships with them instead of the "Hi and Bye" before and after Sunday Services.

This also lightens the load of the ministry leader and/or pastor because now the guys can minister to each other instead having to rely on you solely. It's a great way to build a ministry.

Leonard,
I believe you are right on target with this article. I have found it very difficult and very discouraging to press on after the initial excitement wears off. It takes a lot creativity and support to keep the program fresh and not allow it to become a mediocre process like "just another Bible study or class". Without the support of my Pastor, I could not have made it this far. It also takes some financial investment to make it viable. There are only so many things you can do week after week on just a few bucks out of your pocket.
Training is greatly needed. Man in the Mirror was a great start however, more is needed beyond that. Having some way to connect with other leaders in men's ministries would be valuable. I'm not sure how to make those connections. The few I have secured has been because the Lord brought men like yourself across my path.

Hi Leonard, its good to read your words and see your face. After all these years you can still take a bible text or story and make it live for today. Thankyou. I met you at the Elim conference at Clacton, England way back in the early 80's (I think) I still listen to your tapes 'How to Know and Show the Bible is True'. Following up your teaching on the cults I started 'Cult Rescue' and have reached many, some but not all Christians now, but praise God not cultists. May God continue to bless you and yours.
